P5 squad 24 January 2010

With the recent inclement weather over the Festive period, no mini-rugby has been played at Beveridge Park since early December.  It was, therefore, a joy to see the weather hold steady and for so many young players to turn up at Beveridge Park this Sunday for the first rugby action of 2010.  Our visitors were Perth and Dunfermline .

With the P5 squad now increasing in number, the Wee Blues were able to put out 2 teams for today’s action.  I’m also taking a leaf out of the 1st XV coaching manual by slowly getting the players to work in groups or pods.  That way consistency in play comes from playing regularly together.

At kick off 2 P5 teams were playing simultaneously.  One team (the “Blues” - Harry, Jack, Rhys, Cameron, Logan and Mathew) took on the Dunfermline Whites while the other team (the “Reds” - Calum, Josh, Joshua, Rowan and Steven) took on Perth .

The game against Dunfermline saw two teams work very hard for each other.  It was very difficult to separate the teams as half-time approached with the score at 1-1, Jack having scored for the Wee Blues.  The Wee Blues were looking the more rusty of the two teams and leaving some holes in the defensive line, Dunfermline were able to used their superior bulk to pile through to score 2 more tries before half-time.  The second half started with the same intensity.  Again, holes in the defensive line allowed 2 tries to be run in before Cameron pulled one back for the Blues.  Final score: 2 – 5.

Meanwhile over on the second P5 pitch, the other Wee Blues “Reds” were caught up in a real ding-dong of a game.  Tries and tackles were being exchanged on a fairly even basis.  The game was memorable for the quick breaks by both teams.  As with the first match the game was played with tremendous passion and energy.  This was also the first outing for new boy, Steven.  Final score: 5 – 7

Back over on the other pitch, the players and parents didn’t have time to catch their breath as one Dunfermline team left the pitch, another one (the Dunfermline Blues) came on.  Didn’t seem to make much difference to the Wee Blues who carried on with the intensity they had started with.  The defensive holes were closed up this time.  However, this Dunfermline team were more flight of foot and ran the ball around the outside.  Although the Wee Blues adjusted well, tired legs were starting to affect them in back-to-back games.  It was 1-3 at half time, Cameron having scored the only try for the Wee Blues.  Logan managed an outstanding score early in the second half but with the score at 2 - 4, the Wee Blues looked exhausted with all the chasing of the ball they had to do and it the final score of 2 – 8 did not do justice to the effort they put in.

For a 4th game, both Wee Blues teams came together against Perth .  With the ability to use subs in the game and rest some weary players, the game was a lively one.  The Wee Blues lost some of their structure but kept the score at 1 – 2 at half-time (Cameron scoring).  The second half was a non-stop, never give up affair from both teams.  Tiredness was clear on both sides but everyone kept giving their all.  With Josh and Cameron scoring tries for the Wee Blues in response to 4 from Perth the final score was 3 – 6.

A great day of rugby from the P5 Wee Blues and our visitors, all magnificently supported by parents from all 3 clubs.
