The late William Ronald Alexander Ferguson 1940 to 2024.
It was with great sadness that the Club learned of the death of long standing member Ron Ferguson in Victoria Hospital on Monday 2nd of September, following a long illness which blighted his last years.
Born and brought up in Kirkcaldy, he attended Kirkcaldy High School. There he excelled
at a number of sports, notably athletics and rugby although he was no mean footballer as well.
School days over, he followed a well trodden path from the High School to Beveridge Park and he was associated with Kirkcaldy RFC for the next sixty years apart from a brief spell with the recently formed Glenrothes RFC.
He served Kirkcaldy as a player, mainly in the 2nd XV, but he had regular 1st XV games starting with a debut match against Broughton in 1963.
Playing days over, he took an interest in the recently formed youth section, notably the under 18 side. From the earliest days in the 1980s, the late Tam White looked after the Colts. Soon after, Ron helped Tam with the coaching, This was hardly a match made in heaven. But in spite of their many verbal clashes, they made a successful coaching team with Kirkcaldy having the top under-18 side in the country for several years. Tom and Ron saw their former colts move into the Club's senior teams with Tom becoming first fifteen coach and Ron looking after both the 2nd and 3rd XVs. Ron's tenure as 3rd XV manager saw many clashes with the old selection committee. Ron wanted the best players for the thirds, never mind the needs of the second fifteen.
In his later years Ron was a regular attender at Beveridge Park for 1st XV matches. He cast a sagacious eye over players' performances and was never short of an opinion, He always drew an eager audience anxious to hear his views as he sipped away at his favourite Auld Cam.
Ron's appearances at Beveridge Park in the last two and three years became fewer and fewer as his illness took a grip and he was always sadly missed for his post match and player performance comments.
Ron is survived by his son Evana and daughter Arlene.
The funeral will be at Kirkcaldy Crematorium on Thursday 19th September, at 1.30 pm.
