After last week's disappointing away performance the Blues set off to a top of the table side, Lasswade who have had great start to their season.
A few regular starters were still missing but the return of captain Rhys Bonner from injury freshened things up for Kirkcaldy in the engine room of the team.
Following, what can only be described as a bad start to the game, led to a converted try for Lasswade at the very start of the match. Having said that, the home side ran the ball the full length of the pitch with good handling and offloading and the result was a try by their fullback. 7-0.
This was followed by some advice for the referee following an untidy scrum which resulted in a yellow card for Gavin McKenzie, as clearly the referee took a slightly different view to the incident. Kirkcaldy weathered the storm of being reduced to 14 players and found their way into the game and forced an error from the home side who were off their feet, the penalty was dispatched by Fin Smith and it was 7-3.
10 minutes later again some good work by Lasswade, following a penalty the home side scored in the corner. 12-3.
Shortly after the score, a neck roll on Rhys Bonner was unnoticed and from the resultant lineout, Lasswade scored again.
Approaching half time Kirkcaldy pressured Lasswade and after repeated infringements a penalty was kicked for favourable line out position. A forward drive from the pack resulted in Marcus Salt crashing over for a try which was converted successfully by Fin Smith 19-10 at half time.
The second half got under way and some good support play from Lasswade put Kirkcaldy under pressure. The home side were repelled by some good defence until another good offload led to a try which was converted 26-10.More pressure from Kirkcaldy and another penalty conceded from the home side gave Fin Smith the chance to add to his tally which he duly did, 26-13.
Just short of the hour mark Lasswade scored on the outside and the try was converted bringing the score to 33-13.
The Blues rallied once more and after some smart work by Fin Smith he found Callum Kennedy who scored a much-needed try, Smith converted to bring the score to 33-20. The same players combined following a kick through from Smith, which Kennedy gladly picked up and darted in to score again. Duly converted by Smith and it was 33-27.
Kirkcaldy then thought they had won the game in the final play, as Owen Bonner was tap tackled as he broke free, regained his feet and dotted down under the posts for what both teams thought would be the winning score. Unfortunately the official deemed that a tackle had been completed and penalised the blues, ending the match.
And that was how the game ended, a bonus point on the road, frustratingly it could have been more, against a team who have been setting the pace for the rest of the league.
The Blues are not far away from the top sides and there is a sense of belief that once things click into place the second part of the season will be promising.
