After a week off due to transport issues prior to the Highland away fixture, Kirkcaldy welcomed Peebles to an overcast Beveridge Park for a fixture which is the most common in their league rugby history, with 37 previous meetings between the clubs since 1992.
The Borderers began brighter as they took advantage of a misfiring Kirkcaldy lineout and scrum to put pressure on the home side's line. On 11 minutes Peebles opened the scoring after finding a space down the blindside to offload for a short range try, converted for 0-7.
Kirkcaldy soon got on the scoresheet with their second foray into the Peebles 22. With the referee playing advantage, Avi Nailatica collected his own chipped ball before offloading to Harris McLeod who reached the try line shrugging off defenders, making it 5-7 after 20 minutes played.
The Blues kept Peebles at bay in their next attack and forced them into touch. However they surrendered possession at the resultant lineout and penalty infringements kept the pressure on, allowing the Gytes men to eventually score their second try for 5-14.
Not long after the restart Peebles kicked directly into touch which allowed the Blues to advance up the pitch with two lineout mauls. Despite the visitors' clearance Kirkcaldy immediately made it back into the 22 and moved towards the line. The ball was sent wide to Alex Webb before he offloaded to Callum Kennedy who darted in for the second try, 10-14 after 35 minutes.
The last action before the break saw the Peebles backs make their mark from halfway, a missed tackle in the Kirkcaldy line allowing them to evade the defence out wide and run in for a third converted try, 10-21 at half-time.
Kirkcaldy began the second half on the front foot, winning a lineout and a scrum penalty 10 metres out from the visitors line. Peebles stole the ball and cleared to touch but a lineout maul provided a try from Craig Hamilton. An uncharacteristic third missed conversion by Fin Smith kept the score at 15-21.
The Borderers were soon up the other end, a penalty extending their lead to 15-24 after 50 minutes.
Both sides struggled to gain the upper hand until Peebles kicked a penalty into the Kirkcaldy 22, eventually taking the ball up to the try line and over for their bonus point try. However the conversion kick out wide was unsuccessful, making it 15-29 with almost an hour on the clock.
Kirkcaldy survived a final Peebles visit to their 22 and then secured a turnover in midfield to start another attack. The ball was shipped wide to Kennedy, who offloaded and then collected a return pass from Nailatica, before grabbing his own kick down the line on the way to the fourth try. The conversion from Ethan Murray closed the gap to 22-29.
The Blues would play out the game with a man in the sin-bin, the referee taking exception to Robbie Penman getting involved with two players already in an off the ball incident. They kept battling but were thwarted after being held up over the try line and the ball was cleared.
Kirkcaldy got one last chance as Peebles fumbled a kick which had failed to find touch. Cheered on by the crowd they forced their way to the line where Danny Jennings finally got the ball down for the try. Murray held his nerve to slot home the conversion from out wide to level the match in the final play.
