It was a game of two halves with the wind and rain howling up the pitch at Bladnoch Park making it a tough outing as Kirkcaldy made the journey to Dumfries and Galloway. Rory Brown and Connor Wood returned to make their first appearances of the season, along with Seb Evans and Stewart Small on the bench.
The Blues had the wind behind them in the first half, and went 12-0 up in the opening quarter with tries from Connor Wood and Michael Harper, the latter converted by Fin Smith. Kirkcaldy got another try before the break with Mark Duckett scoring after a lineout maul, this time converted by Cameron Pilmer for 19-0 at half-time. The tries all coming from the forwards which conditions dictated, the backs seeing little of the ball.
Newton Stewart responded strongly and used the wind better in the second half, matching the visitors tally of three tries but also managing to convert them. Kirkcaldy thought they had scored a crucial fourth try on 52 minutes but the referee ruled that Callum Kennedy dropped the ball while grounding.
The game could have gone either way but it was the home side’s successful conversions that won the game and restricted the Blues to just a single losing bonus point to add to their league total.
