Blues hold on at Dundee for first win of the season

Michael Booth

First victory at Mayfield since 1999.

Kirkcaldy secured a first win of the new league season and a first victory at Mayfield since 1999, but it was a nervy end to the match after Dundee had eaten into their 17 point cushion that was built up early in the second half.

The Blues were first on the scoreboard after their opening attack, thanks to Ethan Murray's penalty kick. There were five changes in the starting lineup, and minutes later it was the returning Kieran Mitchell who took advantage of a fumbled Dundee lineout on their 22 to grab the ball and dive in the corner, for an 0-8 lead.

The home side hit back on 10 minutes with a try after their backs advanced them up the field. It looked like there would be more scores to come however Dundee were unable to take advantage of their visits to the visitors 22, as the Blues defence held firm while barely making it out of their own half. Dundee won a penalty around 30 metres out to level the scores on 37 minutes, but the kick was missed.

Soon after Kirkcaldy made good use of a couple of penalties and lineouts to work their way up field. Eventually, David Foster found some space and offloaded to Mitchell for his second try, converted by Murray to make it 5-15.

The first half then came to an end but only after a kick chase, which began at the halfway line, was a fraction too long for Timmy Kennedy to touch down before it reached the dead ball line.

In the second half Kirkcaldy picked up where they left off and after an attacking lineout, worked their way towards the posts where Jo Dewar found a gap to score his first Blues try, on 47 minutes for a 5-22 scoreline against his former club.

A fourth Blues try would have made things more comfortable but Kirkcaldy could only manage a couple of visits to the opposition 22 as Dundee came back into the game. This time around they found spaces in the Blues defence which allowed them to score twice after the hour mark to cut the lead to 17-22.

It was inevitable that numerous Kirkcaldy penalties would lead to a yellow card - eventually Steve Milne went to the sin bin on 70 minutes.

Dundee pushed for a try which would level the scores but Kirkcaldy held them off and after returning to full strength for the final few minutes, managed to defend their line and steal the ball to end the game.
