Strathmore 15 – 14 Kirkcaldy Reds
Caledonia Reserve League Semi-Final

Kirkcaldy Reds made the trip north to Forfar for their Caledonia Reserve League semi-final, their first competitive outing since January. Any hopes of a smooth return were quickly dashed as they were met with a heavy pitch and worsening conditions, with sleet and snow arriving just as the match kicked off.

Late call-offs forced a reshuffle for the Reds, allowing Aiden to return to his preferred position in the backs. Despite disruptions, the squad was bolstered by the experience of Colin D, Gavin M, Tom M, Gedd and Fozzy, alongside young colts Louis and Charlie.
Both sides attempted to play expansive rugby despite fierce winds and difficult footing. Strathmore struck first after seven minutes, crossing for an early try.

The Reds responded well, defending resolutely against a powerful home pack while looking dangerous in the backline through Gavin, Tom and Ryan.

As the half progressed, the Reds’ forwards began to assert themselves. Strong carries from Louis and Fozzy gained valuable ground, with Louis repeatedly halting opposition momentum with dominant tackles. Their efforts paid off after 18 minutes when the Reds drove over from close range to take a 7–5 lead.

The remainder of the half was fiercely contested, but the score remained unchanged at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with little separating the teams. Strathmore regained the lead around the hour mark with a converted try to edge ahead 12–7.

Undeterred, the Reds dug deep. Rhys, Louis and Fozzy led a series of powerful carries as they pushed into opposition territory. Edwin was narrowly denied in the corner, bundled into touch, before Aiden came within inches of scoring after a sharp line from the wing.

Eventually, sustained pressure told, and Rhys powered over for a crucial try. Gavin added the conversion to give the Reds a slender 14–12 advantage.

With fatigue setting in, both teams continued to trade blows in a gripping finale. Strathmore were awarded a penalty from 30 yards out and, opting against the set-piece after being thwarted by stubborn Reds defence, their full-back stepped up to slot an excellent kick in the difficult conditions, reclaiming the lead at 15–14.

The closing stages were dramatic. The Reds suffered further setbacks as BJ and Jamie were forced off through injury, while Ryan saw yellow for a high tackle. With no replacements left, Gavin battled on through a back spasm as the visitors threw everything into one final push.

In the dying moments, the Reds mounted a remarkable 12-phase attack, working their way from their own try line deep into Strathmore territory. However, just as momentum built, the referee penalised the visitors, bringing the contest to a close.

It was a tremendous effort from both sides in atrocious weather conditions. The Reds can take great pride in their commitment and resilience, particularly after such a long break from competitive action. The effort of the more experienced players to complete the full 80 minutes was especially commendable.

Players of the Match were Fozzy and Louis, both outstanding in the back row. Their defensive work-rate, physicality and willingness to carry the ball made a huge impact throughout. Special mention goes to Louis, who returned from holiday at 2am on the morning of the game to deliver a standout performance.
