History was made at the Beveridge Park on Saturday afternoon. For the first time (if ever) in recent years a current President has turned out for a senior team. With our own George Shields, who played at hooker for the first half and then played for Arbroath when they had injury
problems. This was also the first time Arbroath have played at the Beveridge Park at senior level. And finally a record score for the reds.
After the Mens 1s winning on Friday night and the Colts beating Hamilton Bulls in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, attention turned to the Reds. This was their first home appearance in their new kit, sponsored by MB Landscaping and Stewart Removals. The Reds were hoping to make it a hat-trick of wins for Kirkcaldy. A decent crowd, including the Colts players, was in attendance to provide vocal support.
The pace of the game was set in the opening minute when scrum half and captain Scott Anderson went over for the first try and got his and the Reds second in the next attack in the 4th minute, converted by Ethan Murray. By the 10th minute with tries by Connor Young and Reece Hancock, one of which was converted by Ethan Murray, they already had a try bonus already secured.
The pace of the Reds throughout the team overwhelmed Arbroath. Further tries from Cairn MacDonald (2), Connor Young (2 to complete his hat trick) Scott Anderson (2), McKenzie Galloway, George Shields (with the loudest cheer of the day), Reece Hancock and Chris Saweres with a further 9 conversions from Ethan Murray completed the first half scoring. The HT score being 92-0.
With the one-sided nature of the game the decision was made to reduce the 2nd half to 20 minutes. The Reds rung the changes at half-time, while a few Reds players swapped jerseys including the President, George Shields, to help them out.
Nonetheless, the Reds continued as before although maybe not as fluently as the first half and scored a further 3 tries through Eoin Barker, Ryan Murphy and Cairn MacDonald to complete his hat trick. Ethan Murray converting 2 of them to bring the final score to 111-0.
All due credit must go to Arbroath for coming here with only 15 players ,with a father and son in the mix, and completing the fixture. Throughout the match they never stopped competing, just lacking some experience at this level. The Arbroath players were a credit to their club for the way they continued to complete and never throwing the towel in.
The Reds continued with their winning ways and will be looking forward to their next tough away fixture v Stirling county next Saturday.
